A Child's Road

Where I Stand Between Two Cultures and Two Needs

January 11, 2009

This day began once again with the joyful expectations of fulfilling a dream for children caught in what amounts to as an educational nightmare; a dream of freedom and a chance to capture and retain the miracle of a creative imagination found in nature’s playground. However, after a talk with a dear brother of mine who is an educator in America (as I was), I have discovered that there remains the same children I left ten years ago caught in another kind of nightmare in nature’s playground where they live in fear of going home.

Yes here in Korea children have definite access to unlimited family love and security as they face a growing nightmare found in an educational system out of control. In the United States children have access to precious free time in a virtual ambient natural playground but missing that chance because they must contend with life in a country that must post warning about “child predators” in a culture where a child can’t be guaranteed safety from womb to tomb.

I have less than six month before I cross back over into the world I left behind in the US, back into a world where precious time in the playground can be destroyed by a lack of family love. My dream is seeing my country give the kind of love that Koreans' have for their children as I make efforts to give Korean children a chance to experience the wonders possible in America when children have both family love and the miracle of free time.

Succinctly, Korean children live in love and safety of their family and society. In Korea young women can walk alone on dark roads making their way home after a late class without fear.  Children are perceived as belonging not only to their immediate family but to society in general. The only struggle Korean children wrestle with is an education system that has them going to school from waking to bed time.

American children live in a country blessed with material wealth, plenty of access to natural environments and precious free time to develop a wonderful creative imagination. The struggle many American children battle with is families that don't love them in a society that must post warning for parents to be cautious about letting go of their child's hand in public.

Two different cultures with two vastly different blessing and curses for their children. Which I should serve and how is found on A Child's Road that leads into a wilderness where one Child goes before me.

Now the God of peace make you perfect in every good work, to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ.--HEB. xiii. 20, 21.

Be ready to every good work.--TITUS iii. I.

So, firm in steadfast hope, in thought secure,
In full accord to all Thy world of joy,
May I be nerved to labors high and pure,
And Thou Thy child to do Thy work employ.

J. STERLING

Be with God in thy outward works, refer them to Him, offer them to Him, seek to do them in Him and for Him, and He will be with thee in them, and they shall not hinder, but rather invite His presence in thy soul. Seek to see Him in all things, and in all things He will come nigh to thee.

E. B. PUSEY.

Nothing less than the majesty of God, and the powers of the world to come, can maintain the peace and sanctity of our homes, the order and serenity of our minds, the spirit of patience and tender mercy in our hearts. Then will even the merest drudgery of duty cease to humble us, when we transfigure it by the glory of our own spirit.

J. MARTINEAU.
