All 7 Miles

The day was sunny with a stiff east wind and temperatures at -34 degrees Fahrenheit; a wonderful day on the verge of spring. Not far from the Arctic Circle, I met this fellow who had an interesting story about a repossessed vehicle that was like no other I had ever heard before.

He had explained that he had just finished walking all seven miles that lay between his origin and where I had met him. I wondered why he had walk so far when the wind was so strong for the temperatures that day. With the ten mile per hour wind blowing, it made the weather feel like it was -58F (-50C), not a day I would figure anyone would be out taking a long walk let alone all seven miles.

The story of his long walk had to do with the fact that the original vehicle owner lost control of his vehicle due to reckless driving many years ago. After an accident requiring major vehicle repairs the Maker of the vehicle decided to repossess the vehicle He created and send it back to it place or origin. Except for some minor wear and tear, the vehicle was returned to its starting point but now under the control and ownership of the vehicle Designer and Maker.

Inside the vehicle were documents associated with the original custodial care of the vehicle along with records of former places traveled to. This set of internal files kept in the vehicle's inner systems control provided the Maker with sufficient information to facilitate reregistered in the state of Alaska.  The final Word after all seven miles were completed is the Maker of the vehicle repossessed His creation.

Perplexed, but not in despair; cast down, but not destroyed.--2 Cor. iv.8, 9.

Discouraged in the work of life,
Disheartened by its load,
Shamed by its failures or its fears,
I sink beside the road;--
But let me only think of Thee,
And then new heart springs up in me.

S. Longfellow.

Discouragement is an inclination to give up all attempts after the devout life, in consequence of the difficulties by which it is beset, and our already numerous failures in it. We lose heart; and partly in ill-temper, partly in real doubt of our own ability to persevere, we first grow querulous and peevish with God, and then relax in our efforts to mortify ourselves and to please Him. It is a sort of shadow of despair, and will lead us into numberless venial sins the first half-hour we give way to it.

F. W. Faber.

Never let us be discouraged with ourselves; it is not when we are conscious of our faults that we are the most wicked; on the contrary, we are less so. We see by a brighter light; and let us remember, for our consolation, that we never perceive our sins till we begin to cure them.

François de Salignac de la Mothe Fénelon
