Good Women Are Very Rare Gifts

Finding a woman with virtuous character is vary rare. Considering the old story about The Garden of Eden I have imagined how life may have turned out if Adam stayed close to his wife and watched over all of her explorations and personal meetings there in the beautiful garden. We are presented with only one story, and that is of course the one that says that Eve had a conversation with a serpent and became deceived which brought death to the entire world.

I have recently been pondering the out come of life in the Garden of Eden if Adam had been beside Eve constantly watching over and caring for his wife. When the day came that Eve met the serpent, I have imagined Adam being right there with Eve boldly speaking a word of warning and caution about speaking with any creature capable of conversation ability without first consulting God about the matter to be sure they were doing something that God approved.

I consider my wife Sung-hee to be a "pre-serpent conversation" woman because she possesses the innocence of a child combined with the hard working attitude of an Eden co-worker for Adam. In addition to all the virtues described in Proverbs 31, she is slender, due to careful dietary considerations in addition to hard work which makes her productive and keeps her out of trouble. She has never sat idle by watching TV and eating ice cream.

The day I met here has been unforgettable as she was very timid, demonstrated a desire to walk by my side but slightly behind me. She never looked at me directly in the eye and spoke very rarely. When I expressed a desire to put my arm around her she refused and politely explained that her people refrain from public displays of affection in consideration of the feeling of others who may see, yet do not have a partner; this attitude was later reflected by an entire group of co-workers both men and women who went off for a picnic in segregated groups by the beach. They all sat down in two groups with men by the trees and women by the near by field of tall grass. When I expressed a desire to be with my wife, the men gently told me that all the men remained together choosing to view the women collectively as one would a bouquet of flowers. This took me quite a while to get used to.

Later my western propensity for trying to put my arm around my wife was rejected to the point of just holding well hidden hands then later not even holding hands; the only thing she would rarely permit was the touch of pinky fingers as we walked in less populated areas of town. This segregation of men and women remains a deeply rooted social behavior. Even high school and college male and female students never make an effort to be alone; when they go out they do so in groups of boys and girls and in this way no boy or girl has a chance to be alone together; the group is always watching and remains as the ever present over seers as is with the rest of society.

My wife as with other women always dressed conservatively and never in a way to draw attention to themselves by wearing provocative clothing. My wife is from the original Korea now protected in ways that western words and concepts fail to convey. I will not say that the serpent hasn't tried to talk to my wife for my Father knows that she is a close gate way for his treacherous efforts but as it was in the beginning of my story about my wife, the serpents efforts are less successful if I remain close enough to squelch hisss tongue.

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.--MATT. iv. 4.

Whate'er God does is well,
Whether He gives or takes!
And what we from His hand receive
Suffices us to live.
He takes and gives, while yet He loves us still;
Then love His will.

Is that beast better, that hath two or three mountains to graze on, than a little bee, that feeds on dew or manna, and lives upon what falls every morning from the storehouse of heaven, clouds, and providence?

For myself I am certain that the good of human life cannot lie in the possession of things which for one man to possess is for the rest to lose, but rather in things which all can possess alike, and where one man's wealth promotes his neighbor's.

B. SPINOZA.

Every lot is happy to a person who bears it with tranquillity.
